30 minutes through UNESCO-listed medieval canals — Bruges at its most beautiful
A canal boat tour through Bruges is one of the most popular things to do in Belgium. Gliding through the medieval waterways on a low wooden boat, you see centuries-old merchant houses, stone footbridges and lush private gardens from a perspective impossible to get on foot. The tour lasts 30 minutes and follows a fixed route from Jan van Eyck Square past Rozenhoedkaai, the Green Quay and Minnewater Lake to the Beguinage.
Five licensed operators run identical tours from five different boarding points in the historic centre. Prices are officially set by the City of Bruges: €15 per adult, €9 per child (4–11). No advance booking is needed — simply join the queue at any boarding point and pay on the spot.
💡 Best tip: Arrive early (before 11am) or late afternoon (after 4pm) to avoid the longest queues. In peak summer, the wait at Rozenhoedkaai can reach 45 minutes. Katelijnestraat and Nieuwstraat are quieter alternatives with the exact same tour and price.
The City of Bruges granted concessions to five boat companies. All five run the same fixed route, charge the same official fares and depart from their own boarding point in the city centre.
All five operators run the same route at the same price. Pick the boarding point with the shortest queue. In peak season, points 4 (Nieuwstraat) and 5 (Katelijnestraat) are consistently the quietest.
Fares are officially set by the City of Bruges and are identical at all five operators. Buy your ticket on the spot at the boarding point — online advance booking is not available for individual visitors.

⚠️ No online ticket sales for individual visitors. Unlike Amsterdam or Paris, you cannot pre-book a Bruges canal tour ticket online. Simply queue at any of the five boarding points and pay on arrival. Groups of 20+ and private hires must book in advance directly with the operator.
All five boarding points are within 600 metres of the Market Square. Whichever one you choose, you take exactly the same 30-minute tour for the same price.

Every operator follows the same fixed 30-minute circuit from Jan van Eyck Square through the medieval canal network to the Beguinage — approximately 8 km through Bruges' UNESCO World Heritage area.

⏰ Best time to go: Arrive before 11:00 or after 16:00 for the shortest wait. Saturday and Sunday afternoons in July–August are the busiest times across all boarding points.
📍 Quietest boarding point: Katelijnestraat 4 (Stael) and Nieuwstraat 11 (Gruuthuse) are consistently less crowded than Rozenhoedkaai — same tour, same price, much shorter queue.
🅿️ Getting there: Don't drive into the historic centre. Park at the edge of town (Parking 't Zand, Katelijne or Station) and take the free shuttle bus into the centre. The historic core is largely car-free.
🌧️ Rainy days: Boats operate in light rain. Umbrellas are provided on board, but a light waterproof jacket is recommended — boats are open or only partially covered. Tours may pause during heavy downpours.
⚠️ The Damme boat trip is a different experience. The Lamme Goedzak runs from Bruges to the village of Damme along the Damse Vaart canal (35 min one way, different departure point at Noorweegse Kaai on the outskirts of town). This is a separate operator, a different route and different pricing — not a canal tour of the historic centre.
